The purpose of this assignment was to learn how to gather information about a child’s development using my knowledge of typical development and use of an assessment. I watched videos of two different children, one a typically developing 13-14 month old girl named Sadie and the other an atypically developing girl named Nora. I then scored the HELP on Nora and wrote a report on my interpretation of her developmental progression, according to the HELP.
I'm very proud of this assignment because it was one of the first big assignments for our first pediatrics course, and I received a 100%. Obviously the percentage isn't everything; it was the feedback I received from my professor. She said I included "great observations" and that it was "clear that you are understanding the material and applying it." Up to that point, I did not have a lot of confidence in my clinical observation skills (something I was very concerned about), but this assignment gave me some reassurance, and I have been so in awe of my professor's knowledge and how much we've covered in our first pediatrics course.
